Here’s why: Although in theory when you get different quotes with clearly stated rates of return and payback periods, what actually happens in practice after the system is installed can be very different, especially if the installer’s technical expertise and workmanship is poor.
Let’s use a very simple example: Your installer does not take into account that there’s a huge tree next to your house which casts a shade on your roof.
Although your quote may show that your roof is fully maximized with panels, but when the system is actually installed, one of your panels is blocked by the tree’s shade and as a result, the output of your system is reduced by many magnitudes.
There’s also many other possible errors that could happen when an installer’s expertise is poor, such as suboptimal stringing design, and panel placement without sufficient walkways.
So how do you ensure this does not happen when settling for an installer? The answer: ask them as many technical questions as possible to test their level of knowledge, and area of expertise. Feel free to stress test them and clarify as many doubts as possible. A competent solar installer should be able to answer them confidently and with ease.
